Harbinger
The Harbinger is the flagship model of Carlson Guitars and the foundation of my design philosophy. It represents a focused pursuit of balance, responsiveness, and long-term musicality, refined through careful iteration rather than variation.
Designed with sensitivity and versatility in mind, the Harbinger responds easily to a light touch while retaining clarity and depth as dynamics increase. While it excels in acoustic fingerstyle playing, where nuance, articulation, and harmonic development are essential. It remains equally capable under flatpicking and strumming, maintaining balance, projection, and definition across a wide dynamic range.
My goal is to achieve openness and blooming overtones in standard tuning, allowing the instrument to feel alive and musical without relying on alternate tunings or exaggerated stiffness. A modern bracing approach supports this responsiveness, keeping the top active while preserving control and balance.
In form, the Harbinger draws from small jumbo–inspired proportions, balancing comfort and projection without feeling oversized. Careful attention is given to ergonomics, allowing the instrument to sit naturally against the body and respond fluidly across a wide range of playing styles and dynamics.
Rather than adhering to rigid specifications, elements such as neck profile, string spacing, and overall setup are considered as part of the whole. Each instrument is shaped to support the player, ensuring clarity, comfort, and responsiveness without imposing a fixed formula.
At this time, rather than offering multiple models, my work is centered on the continual refinement of the Harbinger itself. The design is always evolving, informed by each instrument built, with the intention that every Harbinger reflects the highest level of clarity, restraint, and craftsmanship I can offer at that moment in time.
Additional models may emerge in the future, but only when they serve a clear purpose and earn their place alongside the Harbinger.
