About & Philosophy

Carlson Guitars is a one-person workshop dedicated to building finely crafted acoustic guitars with intention, restraint, and longevity in mind. Each instrument is built by me, Cody Carlson, one at a time, with a focus on musical response, balance, and long-term stability.

My interest in guitars began long before I ever considered building them; as a player first, and a craftsman second.

About the Builder

Where It Started

At fifteen, I worked at a local pawnshop and overpaid for an old Harmony electric guitar. Feeling responsible for the mistake, I purchased the guitar from the shop out of my own pocket. When I showed the guitar to an older friend, he told me something that had never occurred to me before: “You can make it whatever you want.”

With no experience, I began modifying the guitar, and predictably, I destroyed it in the process. But that failure revealed something new to me: guitars weren’t just objects to be bought and sold. They were built, repaired, altered, and shaped by hand.

Wanting to understand that world better, I sought out hands-on learning under a well-known guitar repairman in the Pittsburgh area. That exposure confirmed what I already suspected; building guitars, specifically, was what I wanted to pursue.

Playing and Perspective

My personal playing style is rooted in acoustic fingerstyle, where touch, dynamics, and responsiveness matter as much as volume. As a player, I was always drawn to instruments that felt alive under a light hand, guitars that rewarded nuance rather than force.

As I paid closer attention to how guitars were presented and demonstrated, I noticed a growing reliance on alternate tunings to emphasize overtones and complexity. While beautiful in their own right, those tunings often masked how an instrument truly responded in standard tuning.

That observation became a defining goal of my work.

Design Philosophy

At the core of every Carlson guitar is a commitment to sound first.

My aim is to build instruments that exhibit balance, clarity, and blooming overtones in standard tuning, guitars that feel open and responsive without needing sonic workarounds. I focus on designs that support sensitivity, sustain, and musical depth for the player’s everyday tuning and playing style.

Aesthetic design follows the same philosophy. Ornamentation is used sparingly and intentionally, always in service of the instrument rather than distraction from it. Each guitar is built slowly and deliberately, allowing its voice to develop naturally rather than being forced into a predetermined mold.

The Pursuit of Perfection

Every instrument I build is guided by a simple principle: The Pursuit of Perfection — not as a destination, but as a mindset. It is the ongoing effort to refine decisions, listen critically, and remain honest to the craft.

Carlson Guitars exists for players who value tasteful restraint, intention, and an instrument built with longevity in mind. My goal is to produce heirloom-quality guitars, instruments designed to be lived with, played, and passed down, carrying both musical and personal meaning for decades to come.
